Configuring Client Steering and Node Steering on a Linksys router

A quick guide on how to use node and client steering

Client Steering: Let your network direct your wireless devices to the node with the strongest signal.

Node Steering: Allows your nodes to always connect to the node with the strongest signal. If you move a node or if one goes offline, any connected nodes will self-heal by connecting to the strongest signal available.

If some devices are connected to the 2.4 GHz instead of the 5 GHz, try turning the device off and then back on first. If the issue persists, isolate it by turning off the client steering to check if this fixes the issue.

If a device is connected to the furthest node, try power cycling that node.  If the issue persists, then try turning off Node Steering to isolate the issue

How to Turn off Client Steering and Node Steering

linksys gui

  • Go to Advanced

Wi-fi settings advanced

  • You can now toggle Client steering to OFF or Node Steering to OFF

Disabling the Node Steering option will not affect your mesh network. This will only stop the primary node from sending its suggestion of changing the connection for devices to the secondary node.
