A brief overview into download speeds on a games console
Understanding Why Your Console's Download Speed Might Be Slower Than Your Package SpeedIf you're experiencing slower download speeds on your gaming console compared to the speed internet package, there are several factors that could be contributing to this issue. Here are some common reasons and solutions:
Console Server Limitations: Even if you are using a wired connection, the servers hosting the game or update you're downloading might have speed limitations. These servers may not be able to take full advantage of your broadband speed, resulting in slower download times.
Wi-Fi Signal Strength: If your console is connected via Wi-Fi, the signal strength can significantly impact download speeds. The Wi-Fi technology in many gaming consoles is quite old and may not be able to fully utilize the advanced capabilities of modern routers. Our routers use Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7, depending on the model you have, which offer faster speeds and better performance. Ensure your console is close to the router or consider using a wired Ethernet connection for more stable speeds.
Background Activities: Other devices and people using the internet simultaneously can reduce the available bandwidth for your console. Activities such as streaming videos or downloading large files on other devices can sap away the amount of bandwidth available to your Xbox. Pause or limit other internet activities while downloading games or updates to ensure your console gets the maximum possible speed.
Wired Connection: Connecting your console directly to the router with an Ethernet cable will provide the best possible speeds and a more stable connection compared to Wi-Fi.
Mesh Networks: While mesh networks can improve Wi-Fi coverage, they may not always provide the same speeds as a direct connection to the router. For the best performance, connect your console directly to the main router.
Third-Party Boosters and Powerline Adapters: Using third-party Wi-Fi boosters or powerline adapters can sometimes drastically affect your speed. If you need a mesh network, we recommend using Connect Mesh for optimal performance.
Network Congestion: During peak usage times, your internet connection might be slower due to high demand. This can affect your console's download speed. Try downloading during off-peak hours for better performance.
Checking Router Speed: If you would like to double-check that the speed hitting your router is what it should be, you can do this either via the Linksys app (if you have a Linksys router) or the Aginet app (if you have our TP-Link routers). This will ensure that the speed coming down the line is what you're paying for. How that speed gets to your devices is not within our control.
