Understanding Broadband Speed Units

News Broadband Wi-Fi

We get it – there’s quite a lot of terminology to understand in the world of full fibre broadband. It may be second nature to us, but the jargon can be a little confusing to the uninitiated. Broadband speed terminology, in particular, can be confusing ands it’s important to understand exactly what different speed units mean before making an informed decision.

No need to scratch your head for any longer, though. We’ve put together this guide to broadband speed units to help you untangle to web of speed units. Read on for more information on different speed terminology you may encounter on our site.

How Are Broadband Speeds Measured?

Broadband speeds are measured using Megabits per second (Mbps). You'll see this figure referenced throughout our offering.

What Is Mbps?

Mbps is, as mentioned, how to measure broadband speed. Bits are essentially small units of data and Mbps represents the capacity to transfer a whopping 1 million bits each second, making it the industry standard for measuring upload and download speeds.

For example, if you have an internet connection with a speed of 10Mbps, it means that the maximum data transfer rate is 10 megabits per second. Higher Mbps values generally indicate faster data transfer speeds, which can result in quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and faster overall internet performance.

What Is A Good Broadband Speed?

The definition of a "good" broadband speed can vary depending on your specific needs and usage patterns. Different online activities require different levels of bandwidth.

We've all come across the supers, the ultras and the hypers in the world of broaband. These terms aren't just used for the sake of a catchy slogan, they have speed units that characterise them. Here's a quick run through.

Superfast Broadband Speeds

Between 30Mbps and 100Mbps. This is perfect for regular web browsing, HD streaming and online gaming.

Ultrafast Broadband Speeds

Between 300Mbps and 500Mbps. Ultrafast allows for smooth 4K streaming, fast file downloads and lag-free online gaming.

Hyperfast Broadband Speeds

500Mbps+. This is the ultimate choice for data-intensive tasks. Downloading large files, running multiple 4K streams. The difference with 'Hyperfast' broadband is that it is supplied as FTTP (Fibre to the premise).
